Commitment to peace must continue beyond National Peace Consciousness Month – DSWD execs

Officials of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) emphasized on Monday (September 28) that commitment to peace must continue beyond celebrations, as the DSWD concluded its National Peace Consciousness Month observance during the flag-raising ceremony held at the Central Office in Quezon City.

Speaking on behalf of DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian, Undersecretary Evelyn Aribon of the Office of the Secretary Group (OSG) emphasized that peace should be felt through concrete improvements in the lives of communities that have experienced armed conflict.

“As we close this month, let us reflect on what peace means to the people and the communities that we serve. Para sa mga pamilyang matagal nang naapektuhan ng armed conflict, ang kapayapaan ay pagkakataong makapagsimulang muli, maibalik ang kabuhayan, makapag-aral ang mga anak, at makapag-plano para sa kinabukasan,” Undersecretary Aribon said.

The DSWD official also stressed the importance of listening to former combatants and their families to develop interventions that better meet their needs.

“Ang bawat boses ay mahalagang pakinggan sa pagsulong ng kapayapaan. Through the Social Case Management Service, we seek to hear the thoughts of former combatants and their families so that we can respond to their needs more effectively,” Undersecretary Aribon said.

The OSG undersecretary also conveyed Secretary Gatchalian’s appreciation to DSWD Field Offices (FOs) and clusters for participating in the month-long observance and for bringing the message of peace closer to communities.

For her part, Director Miramel Laxa, Deputy Program Manager of the Peace and Development Buong Bansa Mapayapa (PDBBM) – National Program Management Office (NPMO), called on DSWD personnel to sustain their commitment to peace even after the observance ends.

“As we end this month-long celebration, may we not end our commitment within. Let us carry the spirit of peace into our daily work, our communities, and our relationships. Let us continue to build bridges instead of walls, listen before judging, and create opportunities where no one is left behind,” Director Laxa said.

The PDBBM-NPMO head also expressed her appreciation to the DSWD’s Executive Committee (ExeCom), Management Committee (ManCom), and personnel for supporting the celebration of the National Peace Consciousness Month.

Throughout the month, the PDBBM-NPMO held several activities, including trivia games and photo and spoken poetry contests, to promote the Department’s peace and development initiatives. The culminating activity also featured a special peace-themed song presentation from DSWD personnel.

Through its peace and development initiatives, DSWD continues to work with conflict-affected and vulnerable communities, in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to provide social protection interventions and opportunities that support recovery, livelihood, education, and the pursuit of a more secure future. (CC)
