DSWD now on ‘Red Alert’ status due to prolonged effects of habagat

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is now on ‘Red Alert’ status as it monitors the prolonged effects of the southwest monsoon or habagat in parts of Luzon and Visayas.

The alert status was heightened in adherence to National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) Memorandum No. 237, Series of 2026, which raised the national alert status from Blue to Red effective Friday (August 28) at 5:00 p.m. due to recent weather systems affecting the country.

Asst. Secretary Irene Dumlao of the DSWD’s Disaster Response Management Group (DRMG) assured the public that the Department continues to prepare for the possible effects of prolonged rains and flooding.

“Patuloy po tayong nakahanda dahil alam natin na patuloy pa rin ang epekto ng habagat sa ilang bahagi ng Luzon at Visayas. Naka-heightened alert po ang ating mga Field Offices at nakahanda ang ating mga relief resources upang mabilis nating matugunan ang pangangailangan ng ating mga kababayan kung kinakailangan,” Asst. Secretary Dumlao, the DSWD spokesperson, said on Saturday (August 29).

According to the latest Disaster Response Operations Monitoring and Information Communication (DROMIC) report as of Friday (August 28) at 6:00 p.m, the DSWD has over 3.4 million family food packs (FFPs) prepositioned in various warehouses and other strategic locations nationwide.

The DSWD Central Office (CO) also has Php558.77 million in Quick Response Fund (QRF) available to support immediate disaster response operations.

The DSWD spokesperson also emphasized that DSWD Field Offices (FOs) are in close coordination with local government units (LGUs), particularly in areas that may experience flooding, displacement, or other disaster-related incidents, to facilitate possible relief augmentation and the provision of technical assistance.

“Patuloy din po ang ating koordinasyon sa mga LGUs at iba pa nating katuwang na ahensya at LGUs upang ma-monitor natin ang sitwasyon sa mga komunidad at matiyak na mabilis ang pagresponde kung may mga pamilyang kailangan lumikas at nangangailangan ng assistance mula sa DSWD,” Asst. Secretary Dumlao stressed.

The DSWD spokesperson likewise reminded the public to remain vigilant and regularly monitor official weather and disaster advisories, particularly as the habagat continues to bring rains to affected areas.

“Pinapaalalahanan po natin ang ating mga kababayan na manatiling updated sa mga opisyal na abiso ng PAGASA at ng kanilang mga lokal na pamahalaan. Hinihikayat din po natin ang lahat na agad na makipag-ugnayan sa kanilang mga LGU kung kinakailangang lumikas o kung mangangailangan ng anumang emergency assistance,” Asst. Secretary Dumlao said.

The DSWD will continue to monitor developments and maintain its relief resources and response teams on standby, in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to ensure that assistance can be promptly delivered to families and communities as parts of the country continue to experience the prolonged effects of habagat. (CC)

Only employees who need the information to perform a specific job (for example, certificate printing or customer service) are granted access to personally identifiable information.
