DSWD promotes mental health, psychosocial support services for Cebu City residents

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), through the Wireless Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (WiSupport) team of DSWD’s Field Office (FO) 7 – Central Visayas, has provided psychosocial support services to women of Cebu City on Wednesday (March 4).

The activity was part of the National Women’s Month (NWM) celebration organized by the Cebu City local government unit (LGU) at Plaza Sugbo, aiming to promote mental health awareness among women. The event gathered participants who took part in various activities prepared by the city government.

Asst. Secretary Irene Dumlao, the DSWD spokesperson, said promoting women’s rights and welfare is a shared responsibility of both men and women, calling for greater awareness through open engagement and active participation in society.

“This National Women’s Month, it is important to remind the Filipino people of the rights and welfare of our women. As emphasized by DSWD Secretary Gatchalian, the entire Department remains committed to advocating for gender equality and ensuring the protection of women, who continue to serve as mothers, leaders, and the guiding light of our homes,” Asst. Secretary Dumlao said on Friday (March 6).

During the Cebu City event, the WiSupport team distributed 38 information, education, and communication (IEC) materials to 36 women and two men that contained practical tips and guidance on self-care and stress management.

“The Field Office 7 has also included the contact details of its social workers in the materials. Should beneficiaries require additional support, they can easily reach out to any of our Angels in Red Vests, who are always ready and willing to serve,” the DSWD spokesperson pointed out.

Aside from raising awareness among women and individuals, the DSWD-initiated activity reminded them that support is always available and that they are not alone during challenging times.

“DSWD WiSupport remains active even outside national events or special celebrations. Those interested in availing of its services may easily do so by sending a message through the official Facebook page or website of DSWD WiSupport,” Asst. Secretary Dumlao said.

The DSWD’s WiSupport is a digital initiative that provides online mental health, counseling, and psychosocial support services to individuals and families experiencing crises– these include overseas Filipinos in distress, women in difficult circumstances, children needing protection, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and families affected by disasters or conflicts.

Through trained professionals, the program offers psychosocial first aid, counseling, and referrals to specialized institutions.

Clients may access these services through the WiSupport web portal, official Facebook page, and official email: wisupport@dswd.gov.ph, generally available from Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (KB)
