DSWD provides interns hands-on experience in disaster response, logistics operations

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) provided hands-on experience in disaster response and logistics operations to its Government Internship Program (GIP) participants.

On Wednesday (July 8), the DSWD’s Protective Services Bureau (PSB) deployed the first batch of GIP participants to the Luzon Disaster Resource Center (LDRC), one of the major production hubs of the DSWD located in Pasay City, to kick off the educational tour and work immersion.

“We want to maximize the 30-day internship of these students. Instead of just administrative work, mas maganda na nararanasan mismo ng mga estudyante ang proseso sa isa sa ating mga warehouses upang mas lumalim pa ang kanilang kaalaman sa disaster operations and logistics, at maging kaakibat ng departamento sa pagsusulong ng disaster resilience sa bansa,” Asst. Secretary Irene Dumlao of the DSWD’s Disaster Response Management Group (DRMG) said.

This deployment served as a platform for participants to understand the national supply chain management system governing the DSWD’s disaster response operations.

The initiative also provided participants with significant operational experience, allowing them to observe and assist in producing relief goods, such as family food packs (FFPs), from individual components up to the final packaging.

“Iba kasi ang fulfillment and learnings kapag ikaw mismo ang nasa site. Through this initiative, mas maa-appreciate ng mga bata ang power ng volunteer coordination and resource management na siyang present sa LDRC,” Asst. Secretary Dumlao pointed out.

Currently, there are 190 GIP participants deployed at the DSWD Central Office in Quezon City.

The Department divided the participants into five batches and scheduled their deployments on July 8, 9, 10, 14, and 17.

During the educational tour, GIP participants will be stationed at the warehouse hotel for vacuum packing, and warehouses eco and delta for quality control and FFP repacking.

Cristian Rotia from Quezon City University (QCU), a GIP participant present during the first day of the deployment, noted that despite having previous work immersion experience in another organization, the fulfillment he gained from this activity remains truly remarkable.

“Natutunan ko ngayong araw na malaking tulong itong pagre-repack sa mga Pilipino na posibleng maapektuhan ng kalamidad. Important din yung experience ng mga volunteers ngayon dahil di lang sila nakakatulong sa community, pati na rin sa family nila na maaring maging biktima ng kalamidad balang araw,” Rotia shared during the tour.

Mica Ella Mariano, another participant from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), expressed her gratitude for the experience, noting that this activity marked her first time joining volunteers in disaster operations.

“Super thankful po ako bilang GIP. Thankful po ako sa opportunity na ‘to dahil in the future, ang course ko po ay Public Administration, I feel na magkakaroon ako ng knowledge na pwede kong i-apply [sa work and life] dahil sa opportunity na ‘to. Thankful din ako sa mga co-GIPs ko na nakasama ko dito,” Mariano shared.

Pursuant to Kabataan 2000, the GIP aims to provide youth participants with unique exposure to public service, instill a sense of community volunteerism, and equip them with essential workplace life skills. (KB)

The DSWD is the sole owner of the information collected on this site. The DSWD only has access to/collect information that you voluntarily give us via the modules of this website or other direct contact from you. Information collected may be used as a basis for client response regarding services or intervention that may be provided by the DSWD. The DSWD takes precautions to protect information. Upon submission of sensitive information via the website, information is protected both online and offline. Only employees who need the information to perform a specific job (for example, certificate printing or customer service) are granted access to personally identifiable information.
