DSWD remains on alert as heavy rainfall expected due to TD Luis, Habagat; over Php 1.1M worth of aid distributed to affected families

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has distributed more than Php1.163 million worth of assistance to families affected by Tropical Depression (TD) Luis in Bicol and Zamboanga Peninsula Regions.

On Sunday (August 2) at Tabaco Port in Albay province, the DSWD’s Field Office (FO) 5 (Bicol Region) immediately mobilized its Quick Response Team (QRT) to distribute ready-to-eat food (RTEF) boxes to locally stranded individuals (LSIs) affected by the suspension of sea travel due to inclement weather.

Meanwhile, in Barangay Curuan, Zamboanga City, the DSWD’s FO 9 (Zamboanga Peninsula) facilitated the distribution of food and non-food Items (FNFIs) to affected families staying in evacuation centers due to the effects of TD Luis last Thursday (July 30).

Asst. Secretary Irene Dumlao of the DSWD’s Disaster Response Management Group (DRMG) assured the public that the Department continues to monitor the weather situation closely and remains ready to provide immediate assistance to families that may be affected.

“Patuloy pong naka-monitor ang DSWD sa sitwasyon dulot ng TD Luis at ng habagat. Alinsunod po sa direktiba ni Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr. na tiyaking walang maiiwang nangangailangan ng tulong sa panahon ng kalamidad, nakahanda po ang ating mga Field Offices na agad maghatid ng kinakailangang tulong sa mga maaapektuhang pamilya,” Asst. Secretary Dumlao, the DSWD spokesperson, said on Monday (August 3).

As of the latest Disaster Response Operations Monitoring and Information Center (DROMIC) report on Sunday (August 2) at 6:00 PM, 374 families have been affected in Tabaco City, Albay, while 3,682 individuals or 1,212 families in Zamboanga City remain temporarily sheltered inside an evacuation center.

The DSWD spokesperson noted that the Department continues to maintain ample relief resources, with 4.933 million prepositioned family food packs (FFPs) nationwide and Php1.69 billion in Quick Response Fund (QRF) available at the DSWD Central Office (CO).

“Kasabay ng pagmomonitor natin sa sama ng panahon, patuloy din pong tinitiyak ng ahensya na sapat ang naka-preposition nating mga relief resources upang agad nating maipaabot ang kinakailangang tulong sa ating mga kababayan. Bukod po sa halos 5 million Family Food Packs, mayroon din tayong sapat na Quick Response Fund at iba pang relief items na handang i-deploy anumang oras,” Asst. Secretary Dumlao said.

Following the latest Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) Weather Advisory issued on Monday (August 3) at 5:00 AM, several regions, including Regions 1 (Ilocos Region), 3 (Central Luzon), 4-A (CALABARZON), MIMAROPA, Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), and National Capital Region (NCR), were alerted on heavy rainfall over the next couple of days due to TD Luis and the southwest moonsoon or habagat.

The DSWD spokesperson reiterated that the Department is closely coordinating with local government units (LGUs) and other partner agencies to ensure the swift deployment of relief resources when needed.

“Habang patuloy na mino-monitor ng DSWD ang sitwasyon at weather advisories ng PAGASA, patuloy din po nating pinaiigting ang pakikipag-ugnayan sa mga LGUs at iba pa nating katuwang upang matiyak na agad pong makakarating ang tulong sa mga komunidad na maaaring maapektuhan ng nakatakdang malakas na pag-ulan sa mga susunod na araw,” Asst.
