Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Erwin T. Tulfo reiterated his stern warning against unscrupulous individuals taking advantage of government programs and services that they will be dealt with accordingly.

This, after an individual was arrested following an entrapment on Friday, September 16, for allegedly using a fake identity and submitting falsified documents in availing of medical assistance under the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS).

Initial investigation showed that the person whose real name, Jeremiah Galanza Sarmenta, allegedly used different names and identification cards to claim medical assistance. He also presented several medical papers from a government hospital to support his alleged sickness.

Upon verification of his identity by a DSWD employee, the suspect allegedly used a fake name, Alexander Diaz Bartolo, and has claimed several medical assistance from the DSWD Central Office and Field Office-National Capital Region.

The suspect was charged with the crime of estafa (swindling) under Article 315 (2a) of the Revised Penal Code, as amended by Republic Act No. 10951. He is now under the custody of Batasan Police Station in Quezon City.

Upon assumption as head of the DSWD, Secretary Tulfo vowed that he will go after individuals who take advantage of the government’s aid. Likewise, the Department will continue to work with the authorities, specifically the Philippine National Police, to eradicate such malicious activities.

The DSWD, under the leadership of Secretary Tulfo, will continue to be vigilant to ensure that only rightful beneficiaries will receive government assistance. ###
