DSWD’s Walang Gutom Kitchens open to all Filipinos experiencing involuntary hunger

Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian assured the public that the Walang Gutom Kitchen (WGK) facilities in Pasay City, Cebu City, and Zamboanga City remain open daily to serve every Filipino experiencing involuntary hunger.

Itong lugar na ‘to nagiging refuge. Binabalik natin ‘yung dignidad sa kada Pilipino na nakakaranas ng kagutuman,” Secretary Gatchalian said during his visit to the WGK Pasay City branch on Thursday (July 9).

The DSWD established the first WGK at the Nasdake Building in Pasay City in 2024 and later expanded the project by opening a Visayas branch in Cebu City and a Mindanao branch in Zamboanga City in June.

Secretary Gatchalian said all branches operate daily from 6:00 am to 3:00 pm to serve free breakfast and lunch to beneficiaries.

According to the DSWD chief, the Marcos administration plans to establish at least 12 WGK branches nationwide.

This expansion ensures that the program can support families and individuals in street situations (FISS), internally displaced persons (IDPs), and seasonal workers by providing hot and nutritious meals.

The DSWD chief said dietitians in all WGK branches prepare hot meals around the “Go, Grow, and Glow” food groups, with 50% carbohydrates for energy, 30% proteins, and 20% fibers from fruits and vegetables.

In an interview over Radyo Pilipinas, Asst. Secretary Irene Dumlao, the DSWD spokesperson, said the kitchens also target children experiencing hunger and in street situations, as proper nutrition is fundamental to support their overall growth and development.

Secretary Dumlao said.

The WGK is one of the innovations of DSWD Secretary Gatchalian that addresses involuntary hunger as well as the reduction in food wastage by turning donated surplus food from hotels, restaurants, and organizations into hot meals for individuals experiencing hunger. (KB)
