Hope finds its way to Anita’s family through DSWD's AICS

For many Filipino families, their everyday life can become a struggle when a family member becomes sick or contracts an illness. Medical needs often bring unplanned expenses, forcing families to choose between basic necessities and life-saving treatment.

For 66-year-old Anita Gapas Furio of Sabang, Bulusan, Sorsogon, this reality became part of her daily life as she was always worrying on how to continuously provide the medicines needed by her husband Alfredo.

Alfredo, a stroke patient, is also diagnosed with an infarction on the left main coronary artery, which is a serious heart condition that requires continuous monitoring and medication.

Managing Alfredo’s health has been a constant challenge for their family, especially with the financial burden due to the never-ending medical needs.

Fortunately, relief came through the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) program, which is designed to provide immediate financial assistance to Filipinos facing urgent assistance due to illnesses, disasters, or other crisis situations.

The AICS program covers medical assistance, transportation, burial, educational needs, and other emergency-related expenses to help families cope with sudden difficulties.

Through the DSWD Field Office 5’s (Bicol Region) Irosin Satellite Office, Anita was able to receive Php6,000 in medical assistance — a form of support that immediately brought hope and relief to their household.

The assistance availed from AICS will be used to purchase Alfredo’s maintenance medicines, ensuring that he continues to receive the treatment necessary for his condition.

For Anita, caring for her husband has become a daily responsibility. With three children to support amid the challenges that come with caring for a loved one battling an illness, every bit of help counts.

Over the years, the Furio family found the-much needed support from DSWD as they received medical assistance through the AICS program several times now.

“Maraming salamat po sa DSWD, lalo na sa AICS Irosin Satellite Office sa aking natanggap na Php6,000 assistance. Malaking halaga na po itong tulong sa pambili ng maintenance na gamot ng aking asawa. Kailan ma’y hindi niyo po ako binigo at sana’y patuloy kayong mag-serbisyo sa mga nangangailangan,” Anita shared with heartfelt gratitude.

Anita’s story reflects how the AICS program continues to reach families in communities who are facing medical and financial hardships.

Through the timely assistance, the AICS program provides not only financial relief but also renewed hope for families navigating difficult circumstances.

For Anita, the AICS cash aid was more than just financial support. It is also a reassuring presence that her family is not alone during difficult times.

Through social protection programs like the AICS, the DSWD continues to uphold its commitment to be a dependable partner of Filipinos, providing assistance and helping families move forward despite life’s challenges. (KT)
