PBBM, DSWD chief open Walang Gutom Kitchen in Zamboanga City; 300 persons with involuntary hunger to benefit daily

One week after launching the Walang Gutom Kitchen (WGK) in Cebu City, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian opened another soup kitchen, this time in Zamboanga City.

“Noong isang linggo lang ay binuksan natin ang Walang Gutom Kitchen sa Cebu City. Ngayon ay nandito naman po tayo sa Zamboanga City para buksan ang ikatlong soup kitchen ng DSWD. Kung maaalala ninyo, isa sa birthday wish ng ating Pangulong Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. ay wakasan ang kagutuman. Ito pong kitchen ang isa sa kontribusyon ng DSWD sa adhikain na ’yon,” Asst. Secretary Irene Dumlao, the DSWD spokesperson, said on Monday (June 29).

Located at the FGL Warehouse along Maria Clara Lorenzo Lobregat Highway, the newly-launched kitchen serves breakfast as early as 6:00 am and lunch starting at 11:00 am, until the last available plate.

The Zamboanga City kitchen can serve daily breakfast and lunch to a maximum of 300 families and individuals in street situation (FISS) as well as persons experiencing involuntary hunger.

“Gaya ng soup kitchen natin sa Pasay City at Cebu City, open po ang WGK dito sa Zamboanga araw-araw para magbigay ng libreng almusal at tanghalian sa mga kababayan natin na nakaka-experience ng involuntary hunger,” the DSWD spokesperson said.

During the launching ceremony, the DSWD chief and the Chief Executive served free hot and nutritious meals to the early birds in the kitchen.

Secretary Gatchalian and President Marcos Jr. also shared a meal and a light banter with families and individuals dining at the WGK.

Last June 22, President Marcos Jr. and Secretary Gatchalian opened the second WGK in Arellano Boulevard, corner General Maxilom Avenue Extension in Cebu City.

According to Asst. Secretary Dumlao, the Cebu kitchen already served a total of 1,502 meals from June 22-28.

With the opening of the soup kitchen in Zamboanga City, the WGK now operates across all three major island groups in the country — one in Pasay City in Luzon, Cebu City in the Visayas, and Zamboanga City in Mindanao.

The WGK is one of the innovations of Secretary Gatchalian that addresses involuntary hunger, as well as the reduction in food wastage by turning donated surplus food from hotels, restaurants, and organizations into hot meals for individuals, adults and children alike, experiencing hunger. (YADP)

The DSWD is the sole owner of the information collected on this site. The DSWD only has access to/collect information that you voluntarily give us via the modules of this website or other direct contact from you. All of the provisions in the Data Privacy Act will be observed specifically on the management of personally identifiable information.

Information collected may be used as a basis for client response regarding services or intervention that may be provided by the DSWD. Information will not be shared with any third party outside of the Government, other than as necessary to fulfill the requested services of a client. The DSWD, however, reserves the right to request the applicants to submit the hardcopy of documentary requirements in order to verify the authenticity of the information.

Unless otherwise provided, the DSWD or any of its authorized personnel may contact the client via email or SMS in the future for the purpose of status updates with regard to the transaction/service request, changes to this privacy policy, or other information reasonably necessary to effect the social service mandate of the DSWD.

The DSWD takes precautions to protect information. Upon submission of sensitive information via the website, information is protected both online and offline. Wherever the Department collects sensitive information (such as passport and Birth Certificates), that information is encrypted and transmitted to the DSWD in a secure manner. This may be verified by looking for a lock icon in the address bar and looking for "https" at the beginning of the address of the web page. Only employees who need the information to perform a specific job (for example, certificate printing or customer service) are granted access to personally identifiable information. The computers/servers, where personally identifiable information is stored, are kept in a secure environment.
