Pinakbet Mais-aya sa Cadiz wins first-ever DSWD Walang Gutom Cook-off Challenge in NIR

The Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) Walang Gutom Program (WGP) hailed “Pinakbet Mais-aya sa Cadiz” by Kusinera Teresita Villegas and Asst. Kusinero Connie Magbanua of Cadiz, Negros Occidental as Walang Gutom Kusinero Cook-off Challenge first regional winner during the Innovations Cavaran held at the Negros Oriental Convention Center in Dumaguete City last July 2.

The Walang Gutom Kusinero Cook-off Challenge was part of the Innovations Cavaran in the Negros Island Region (NIR) led by Undersecretary Eduardo Punay of the DSWD’s Innovations and Program Development Group (IPDG).

“First time na nandito tayo sa NIR upang ipatupad at gawin itong Kusinero Cook-off Challenge. Ito po ay napakahalagang component ng Walang Gutom Program, bahagi ng social behavioral change ng ating programa, kung saan tinuturuan natin or sinusubukan natin ang kakayahan ng ating mga benepisyaryo sa kanilang natututunan sa buwanang nutrition education sessions kung saan tinuturuan sila kung paano mag-prepare at magluto ng pampamilyang pagkain na mura, masarap, at masustansya,” Undersecretary Punay said.

The winning team tweaked the Pinakbet dish by adding crushed corn from the city of Cadiz.

Each of the meals prepared by the participants was judged based on four criteria: taste and quality, convenience and replicability, nutritional balance, and cost-efficiency.

The team of Kusinera Teresita and Asst. Kusinero Connie got the highest score from Chef Marky Bartolome, the official “Coachsinero” of the cook-off challenge, Social Technology Bureau (STB) Asst. Bureau Director Marilyn Moral, and other judges from the local government unit (LGU).

“Ang mananalo dito sa first-ever NIR Walang Gutom Kusinero Cook-off Challenge Regional Championship ay magwawagi ng cash prize at Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP),” the IPDG undersecretary said.

According to Undersecretary Punay, the regional champion will also represent the NIR in the national championship to be held on July 17.

The DSWD official said the Innovations Caravan aims to bring the national program closer to the Filipino people and encourage provincial and local governments to help the national government by integrating or replicating these initiatives within their own localities.

“Ang bilin po sa amin ni Pangulong Bongbong Marcos Jr., noong kami ay nagsisimula, kapag kayo ay mag-i-implement ng programa, sisiguraduhin na makikipagtulungan tayo sa provincial at local governments para siguraduhin ang success ng programa. Yan po ay nanggaling sa ating Panguo na long-time governor at kami ay pinalad na magkaroonn ng secretary na long-time mayor ng Valenzuela City kaya naiintindihan nila ang kahalagahan ng role ng local government sa pag-implement ng national programs,” Undersecretary Punay pointed out.

Among the programs highlighted in the caravan were the DSWD’s WGP, Tara, Basa! Program, Pag-abot Program, ProtecTeen, Project ARUGA, Angel Pets, and Apo Ko: Kwento ni Lolo’t Lola, Gabay ng Kabataan.

The WGP is the flagship anti-hunger program of the Philippine government, which is aligned with the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to combat food insecurity and reduce involuntary hunger among Filipino families. (YADP)

The DSWD is the sole owner of the information collected on this site. The DSWD takes precautions to protect information. Upon submission of sensitive information via the website, information is protected both online and offline. Only employees who need the information to perform a specific job (for example, certificate printing or customer service) are granted access to personally identifiable information.
