DSWD’s newly-launched program spotlights elderly, kids story-bonding sessions

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) launched its intergenerational project, “Apo Ko: Kwento ni Lolo’t Lola, Gabay ng Kabataan,” on Thursday (February 20) at the Haven for the Elderly in Tanay, Rizal.

This timely project aims to build on the strengths of the elderly sector in giving guidance to young children through their stories filled with wisdom and values gained from their years of experience.

Undersecretary Emmeline Aglipay Villar of the DSWD’s International Affairs, Attached and Supervised Agencies (IASAs) Group delivered the message
of Secretary Rex Gatchalian underlining the importance of the project which recognizes the role of ‘lolos’ and ‘lolas’ as the pillars of society and the youth as the hope of the country’s future.

In the pilot implementation, the lolos and lolas from the DSWD’s Haven for the Elderly and Golden Reception and Action Center (GRACES) will be having story-bonding sessions dubbed as “Apo, Lola, Lolo Sessions and interactive activities called “Legacy Labs” with 4 to 5-year-olds in child development centers.

Present in the launching were Mayor Rafael Tanjuatco of Tanay, Rizal; Director Barry Chua of the DSWD’s Field Office – CALABARZON; Assistant Regional Director Bienvenido Barbosa of the DSWD-National Capital Region (NCR); the lolos and lolas from the Haven for the Elderly and GRACES; and the children-beneficiaries of the project.
