The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) received US$200,000 worth of donated items from the Government of Korea through the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) for the families affected by the “habagat,” as a result of typhoon ‘Gener’ which hit Metro Manila and parts of Luzon last August.

Social Welfare and Development Secretary Corazon Juliano-Soliman received the donation from His Excellency Ambassador Hyuk Lee in a ceremonial turnover held today, October 18 at the DSWD-Central Office, Quezon City.

The donation consists of 1,500 sets of hygiene kits and 4,000 pieces of blankets.

The donation arrived in the Philippines in September and was immediately transported by DSWD personnel to Regions III and IV-A where thousands of families in Bulacan, Pampanga and Laguna were displaced.

Secretary Soliman expressed her heartfelt gratitude for the generosity of the Korean government. “They have helped us last year donating items for the victims of ‘Sendong,’ and now, they are extending their support to the families affected by the ‘habagat.’ “These items will go a long way in keeping them warm and clean, and will alleviate their sufferings,” Secretary Soliman said.

For his part, Ambassador Hyuk Lee reiterated his country’s commitment to help disaster victims in the Philippines.  ###
