The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) joins the Filipino nation in celebrating the 122nd Anniversary of the Declaration of Philippine Independence which carries the theme, “Kalayaan 2020: Tungo sa Bansang Malaya, Nagbabayanihan, at Ligtas (Towards a Free, United, and Safe Nation).”

Our Independence Day celebration for this year comes at a time when we are confronted by one of the most challenging global health and social crises in history. The severe social and economic impact of COVID-19 pandemic is a serious threat to our independence.

Today’s celebration reflects the lessons of history so that we may surpass the challenges and move forward in a single direction towards the attainment of our dreams and aspiration for our country – a nation free from hunger and poverty. As we pay tribute to our courageous ancestors who fought for our freedom, we join the nation for a united stand in pursuit of independence against poverty amid the threats of COVID-19.

I take pride in working with one of our modern heroes – the “Angels in Red Vest” who have exemplified solidarity amidst adversity. They have shown compassion and commitment in promoting and protecting the interest and welfare of the poor, vulnerable, and marginalized in these trying times.

Given the various natural and man-made risks, as well the scale of the challenges on poverty, the “Angels in Red Vest” joined other public servants and volunteers to foster efficient services for the common good.

As such, we express our profound gratitude to our health professionals, social workers, law enforcement officers, and essential workers, among many others, who have been leading the battle against COVID-19; confronting the disease head-on, even at the expense of their own lives.

Challenges remain, but we have the capacities to overcome these so we do not pass them on to those who will follow us. Let us forge our synergies and tread a single path towards a common goal.

Sa ating pagbabayanihan, sama-sama tayong tumungo sa isang bansang malaya at ligtas.
