In celebration of the 72nd founding anniversary of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), His Excellency President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. spearheaded the inauguration of a multi-purpose facility constructed and donated by the Department of Public Works and Highways to DSWD Central Office on Tuesday, January 31.

The President was joined by Second Gentleman, Attorney Manases Carpio, representing Vice-President Sarah Duterte-Carpio who sent her greetings to the entire DSWD workforce for their invaluable role in social empowerment.

DSWD-Officer-in-Charge Undersecretary Eduardo Punay expressed the Department’s gratitude to the President and to the Vice-President for being part of the 72nd anniversary celebration, with the theme “DSWD@72: Kaagapay sa Pagbangon, Katuwang sa Bawat Hamon,” and in leading the inauguration of the multipurpose building.  He added that the President’s continued support to the DSWD’s advocacies is an inspiration to the Department.

With the multi-purpose facility, DSWD clients, especially those availing the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation, will now “enjoy a comfortable area while their request for assistance is being processed,” Undersecretary Punay added.

In addition, the multipurpose facility is also intended to aid in promoting and cultivating a healthy and productive workforce by providing them with a venue for sports and exercise.

An extremely important Department

In his message, President Marcos noted that DSWD is an “extremely important Department” in the government.

The President said, “Today, we recognize and take pride in the institution’s stability and reliability. For over 70 years, the DSWD has remained unwavering in your mission to improve the lives of every Filipino especially those who are in distress, those who are in danger, and those who we can see as disadvantaged.”

President Marcos commended the officials and staff of the Department saying, “your dedication has proven vital to the success of this noble institution and this noble work that you do for our people.  That is why I join the entire Filipino people in expressing our gratitude for your continued excellence in rending public service.”

The President also said that DSWD, “especially in the pandemic, has been the lifeline for millions of Filipinos.”

The President also said that the efforts and sacrifices of the entire Department have helped the government in its poverty alleviation and hunger mitigation efforts.

He also stressed that DSWD’s work is crucial and therefore, must continue implementing notable programs that improve the lives of those in need like the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program, Unconditional Cash Transfer program, and the Social Pension program, among others.

Lastly, President Marcos enjoined the DSWD to continue being a “shining example of an efficient, compassionate, and selfless service in our government.” ###
